At this time of the year, the combination of abnormally high tides, heavy rain, and the gravitational pull between the Earth and the moon can cause a phenomenon known as King Tides. The beginning of the new year is a great time to get your personal records in order and to prepare for a disaster. Making sure you have quick access to personal financial, insurance, medical and other records is crucial for jump starting the recovery process. Here are some tips from ready.gov:
- Gather financial and critical personal, household and medical information.
- Consider saving money in an emergency savings account that could be used in any crisis and keep a small amount of cash at home in a safe place.
- Obtain property (homeowners or renters), health and life insurance if you do not have them and review policies annually.

Resolve to Prepare in a Year
Are you prepared for an unexpected emergency like an earthquake or wildfire? Do you know how everyone will stay in touch? Take the first step by creating a communications plan. Ask an out-of-area friend or relative to be the contact for you and your family. Then, make sure everyone has the number written down or preprogrammed into a phone to use in case of emergency. Simple steps like this can make the difference.
