Nisqually earthquake aftermath

The 2001 Nisqually earthquake occurred at 10:54:32 local time on February 28, 2001 and lasted nearly a minute. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and caused extensive injuries and property damage.  Learn more about earthquakes, including the local threat in Kitsap County.

Be Alert!

Kitsap Alert is an emergency notification system that provides critical safety information in the event of an emergency in Kitsap County. You can choose to receive information via text message, email and/or an automated voice phone call. KCDEM moved to a new alert and warning platform in January, 2023. Preventing Fires

Tragically, thousands of families in the US are impacted each year because of house fires. Here are a few steps you can take to prevent a fire in your home from FEMA and the U.S. Fire Administration.
1. Test your smoke alarms regularly. Use the test button to make sure that they are working properly.
2. Make sure that fire extinguishers are fully charged and use only on small fires.
3. Consider installing a heat alarm for your garage.
