During the winter storm between Christmas and News Year’s Day, Kitsap County Emergency Managment and Human Services provided a way for Kitsap County residents to escape the cold and stay safe.
Even before the cold and snow arrived, preparations were made to open four nighttime Severe Weather Shelters at locations across Kitsap County. Additionally, one central daytime Emergency Warming Center was established at the Kitsap Fairgrounds Pavilion. Central to the success of these emergency provision is the team of vetted and trained Emergency Worker volunteers. Their exceptional efforts were featured in a recent articles in both the Kitsap Sun and the Kitsap Daily News. Also contributing to this effort was the provision of free transportation to the Warming Center and Severe Weather Shelters by Kitsap Transit and the non-profit Gather Together Grow Together.
The Severe Weather Shelters will continue to activate in response freezing conditions through March 31. Information on how to sign up as an Emergency Worker volunteer is found here.
