Schools have a responsibility to keep staff and students safe and protected. There should be a plan for continuing or restarting operations following a disaster. Schools should also train their staff and test their plans on a regular basis. When schools are prepared, it reassures parents that their kids will be safe and protected until they can reunite.
Key Considerations
Each school district handles its own emergency preparedness plan. The Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management (KCDEM) recommends that parents:
- Review your local school district’s plan
- Familiarize yourself with what to expect from your school in the event of an emergency
- Become involved in updating and revising plans
- Learn how and when your school district exercises plans
KCDEM reviews school district plans when invited.
