Preparing for King Tides this winter

At this time of the year, the combination of abnormally high tides, heavy rain, and the gravitational pull between the Earth and the moon can cause a phenomenon known as King Tides. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts possible higher ‘King Tide’ levels on certain days between November and February in Kitsap. Prepping for back-to-school is a great time to ALSO involve kids in preparing for the next emergency.

  • BEFORE an emergency, teach your child how to dial 911
  • Who’s your emergency contact? Make sure the kids know who it is and practice with them.
  • Update school records and discuss emergency contact numbers with kids before they go #BackToSchool
  • Review your school’s plans for tornadoes, earthquakes and other disasters

Wildfire Preparedness

Before a wildfire happens, take time to:

  • Know what to do before, during, and after a wildfire.
  • Learn your evacuation routes and plan to evacuate if advised by local authorities.
  • Have emergency supplies in place at home, at work, and in the car.
  • Check your insurance policies to ensure you have enough coverage.
  • Create a communications plan with your family.
